Alaska Ironkids Triathlon Race Report

Last Saturday, March 7, 2015, boys and girls aged 6 to 14 years old swam, pedalled, and ran in Alaska Ironkids Triathlon held in Subic, Bataan.

The atmosphere was festive and you can feel the energy and excitement of the participants as they prepare their gears in the transition area like grown up triathletes, and listened attentively to Race Director, Coach Ani de Leon-Brown during the race briefing. Parents and siblings were present to support and cheer the young triathletes who competed in the spirit of fun and camaraderie.

The kids were grouped according to their age: [a] 6 to 8; [b] 9 to 10; [c] 11 to 12; and [d] 13 to 14.

Age groups 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 swam 6 laps of the 50 meters pool of Wow World for a total of 300 meters. After the swim, they rode their bike for 9 kilometers along Rizal Highway. Lastly, they ran around the Remy Field Oval for 5 laps for a total of 2 kilometers.

Age groups 6 to 8 and 9 to 10 did a shorter version of 100 meter swim, 3 kilometer bike, and 1 kilometer run.

Newbie participants who simply wanted to have a feel of the race joined the "Play" categories.

Top finishers received their trophy and teddy bears. All finishers got their medals.

But even before the start of the race, all participants were already CHAMPIONS! They trained and learned the value of hard work and discipline in conquering challenges and reaching dreams. Parents and coaches guided them along the way, through proper nutrition, rest, and recovery. These young triathletes will bring with them the fun and learnings they experienced through the sport as they grow and become champions in real life.
